About the McGill Skull & Snake Art

The McGill Skull & Snake art originated as one of Powell Peralta's most iconic graphics. Created by Vernon Courtlandt Johnson for Mike McGill's pro model, it appeared in 1984, a period when McGill was also making skateboarding history with the development of the famous 540 McTwist.

The skull with the snake and lightning bolts became a classic symbol of skate culture. The inspiration came from the Skull & Bones theme, which was already very strong at the time, with elements added from Mike McGill's identity, including the snake and lightning bolts, references linked to Florida, his home state.

Today, the McGill Skull & Snake remains one of Powell Peralta's most recognized artworks, carrying all the strength of the old-school era and the authenticity of a brand that helped build the history of global skateboarding.
