How to choose the ideal surfboard for your level
Choosing the right surfboard makes all the difference in your surfing progress. The wrong board can frustrate learning—or hinder the evolution of experienced surfers. Here's how to make the right choice according to your skill level.
Beginner: stability is everything
If you're just starting, prioritize long and wide boards, such as longboards (9 to 10 feet) or funboards (7 to 8 feet). They offer more stability, make paddling easier, and increase your chances of catching waves. High volume = more buoyancy = more surfing.
- Length: 7'6" to 10'0"
- Width: above 21"
- Volume: 60L or more
Intermediate: time to evolve the shape
With drops mastered and some basic maneuvers, you can transition to a mid-length or a fish. These shapes offer more maneuverability without sacrificing performance in smaller waves—which are the most common in Brazil.
- Length: 6'4" to 7'4"
- Fish: good option for weak and short waves
- Funboard: perfect transition to the shortboard
Advanced: shortboard and high performance
Those who have been surfing for years and are looking for radical maneuvers will prefer a shortboard (5'8" to 6'4"). It's the most responsive shape, but it requires technique—harder paddling, less volume, more sensitivity.
- Length: 5'8" to 6'4"
- Volume: 25L to 35L (depending on weight)
- Ideal for more powerful waves
Bonus tip: invest in the right fins
Just as important as the board, fins define the shape's response. Thruster (3 fins) for control and power, twin fin for speed and retro style, and single fin for classic longboard.
